6. Creators chafe at Big Two editorial control
There were what appeared to us to be an unusually high number of public tiffs between creators and Big Two editors over control issues in 2013, leading one departing DC creator to say “DC is in the toilet right now”. DC’s co-publishers argued that there was nothing out of the ordinary in the amount of conflict , but another high profile departure followed.
Part of the reason these creators are leaving are due to a heavy dose of “I can’t take it anymore.” The other reason is that they can afford to. Independent creators succeeding on sites like Kickstarter and building their own mobile fan-following enabling more talent to go it alone. This is also helping achieve record success at Image Comics, which although centralized, is being rewarded for their hands-off approach. Creators promote individually through conventions, blogs and social media, and fans can now find them without the Big Two.
